I. Endowment for Institution of Chairs
  • Institutions or individuals can donate a sum of not less than Rupees Three Million or One Hundred Thousand Dollars to institute an Endowment Chair at the NLSIU.

  • The Chair can be named after an institution or an individual in any specific branch of Law or a subject of inter-disciplinary nature;

  • The Endowment amount shall be invested in bank deposits or such other deposits like. Unit Trust of India so that the maximum possible annual interest is accrued;

  • The expenditure on the salary and other service benefits of the incumbent appointed to the Chair shall be met out of the proceeds of the endowment amount; provided, that excess expenditure if any incurred in any particular year over and above the income from the deposits shall be met by the NLSIU; provided also the unspent balance, if any, in the interest accrued in any year shall be added to the corpus of the Endowment;

  • The appointment of a person to the Chair shall be made by the Executive Council either by invitation of an eminent academician or a jurist based on the recommendations of the Director or by direct recruitment as per the regular process of selection under the provisions of the Act and the Schedule;

    • In case of appointment by invitation, no age restriction will be applicable. However, in case of appointment by direct recruitment, the incumbent will be governed by the normal service conditions of the NLSIU including the age of superannuation.


II. Endowment for Institution of Scholarship
  • Institutions or individuals can donate to the NLSIU a sum of not less than Rupees One Hundred Thousand for instituting Scholarships to be awarded to the Under-graduate and/or Post-graduate students;

  • The endowment amount of Rupees One Hundred Thousand shall be invested in fixed deposits to attract the maximum possible interest;

  • The interest so derived from all such donations for Scholarships shall be pooled together in a year and the University shall award such number of Scholarships/Freeships for deserving students as the Faculty Committee may decide in any particular year. The main criterion for all such award of Scholarships/Freeships shall be merit coupled with means. The decision of the Faculty Committee as approved by the Director shall be final;

  • If however, a donor wishes to name the Scholarships after an institution or an individual he can do so with the approval of the NLSIU. The donor may indicate the specific conditions if any, acceptable to the NLSIU, for the award of such Scholarships. In all such cases, the Scholarships shall purely be on considerations of academic merit and achievement. The interest earned will be disbursed as Scholarship to the student/students for 10 months.

  • Once a Scholarship is awarded under this clause the Scholarship will continue for the full period of the programme which the candidate is pursuing subject to satisfactory progress. In all such cases at the end of each year the renewal of the Scholarship is effected after going through his progress report. In cases of unsatisfactory progress, the Scholarship will be terminated on the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee and with the approval of the Director.

  • As soon as the Scholarships/Freeships are announced each donor will be informed about the names of students who are awarded the Scholarships.


III. Endowment for Institution of Medals
  • Institutions or individuals can donate a sum of not less than Rupees One Hundred Thousand for instituting a Gold Medal;

  • The endowment amount of Rupees One Hundred Thousand shall be invested in fixed deposits to accrue the maximum possible interest;

  • The interest so derived shall be utilised for the award of the Medal and the unspent balance of interest if any, shall be added to the corpus of the endowment;

  • The Medal can be as per the wishes of the donor named after an institution or individual and as agreed by the NLSIU;

  • The Medal to be awarded shall be of 22 Crt. gold with the name of the medal and the name of the recipient inscribed on it;

  • The selection of candidate for the award of the Medals shall be done by a Faculty Committee and in accordance with the Rules prescribed in this regard. The decision of the NLSIU shall be final and no representation shall be entertained in this regard;

  • The NLSIU shall inform the donor about the name of the student selected for the award.


IV. Endowment for creation of Physical Facilities
  • Besides, Institutions and individuals can make a one-time contribution of not less than Rupees Five Hundred Thousand to the University for providing any or part of the following infra-structural facilities;

    • Equipping the Moot-Court Hall with facilities and naming the Hall after the Donor or his/her nominee;

    • Equipping the Seminar Hall with Audio Visual and other facilities and naming the Hall and the Donor or his/her nominee;

    • Providing for educational equipment and teaching aids including computers;

    • Purchase of a Bus to students for Legal Aid Work;

    • Construction of cluster of rooms for participants in Continuing Education Programmes.

  • The donor may further negotiate with the NLSIU keeping in view his/her intentions and donate the amount as mutually agreed.
