Eligibility

An applicant seeking admission to the Degree of J.S.D. (Doctor in Jurisprudential Sciences) must have passed LL.M. Degree of the NLSIU or its equivalent, having secured a minimum of 4.0 CGPA or LL.M. degree of any other university recognised as equivalent there to having secured a minimum of 55% of the marks in the aggregate.


Admission Procedure

Eligible candidates, will have to subsequent to the admission notification, apply to the Registrar in the prescribed form, which can be obtained after paying an application fee of Rs. 500/- by Demand Draft drawn on the State Bank of India or any other nationalised bank, payable to National Law School of India University at Bangalore and submit the same duly filled in within the stipulated time.


Selection Procedure

Eligible candidates shall apply in the prescribed form within the stipulated last date. Candidates for the programme shall be selected by the Admission Committee appointed for the purpose based on an assessment consisting of

  • an admission test organised by the NLSIU,

  • the academic record of the student, and

  • performance at the interview to determine the applicant's aptitude for higher studies and research.


Advisory Committee

The Director shall constitute an Advisory Committee with a Principal Guide and two others from the senior faculty of the University for every registered candidate. An outside Expert may also be appointed as a member of the Advisory Committee.


Duration

The course duration shall be for a period of two years. The University may, however, reduce the stipulated period of two years in view of the progress made by the concerned students as reported by the principal guide from time to time.


Assistantship/Fellowship

Candidate admitted to the degree programme may be awarded an assistantship or a fellowship according to the rates determined by the Executive Council from time to time on fulfilling such terms and conditions as may be prescribed.


Course Schedule Assignments and Distribution

On the advice of the Advisory Committee, the Director may ask any registered candidate to pursue the M.Phil. programme of one year as a pre condition to pursuing the J.S.D. programme. Students selected for Teaching Assistantship shall in addition undertake to

  • Design Courses,

  • Participate in collective/co-operative teaching.

  • Guide students in their project work,

  • Conduct core-study workshop, moot-court or tutorial work,

  • Collect materials for March of the Law Journal and undertake editorial work in the National Law School Journals, and

  • Supervise co-curricular activities and other duties as may be assigned by the Faculty from time to time.

Note : The topic, programme and the plan of research work in general and work on the approved Research project towards the submission of the Thesis for the degree in particular shall be as recommended by the Advisory Committee and approved by the Academic Council.


Scheme of Examination and Evaluation
  • Each registered student has to give as many seminars as may be determined by the Advisory Committee.

  • After the final seminar, the Principal Guide has to certify that the thesis is ready for submission and that the research work is original and not published or submitted elsewhere.
